App Icon Design That Wins the Tap

The icon is what people tap beside your name. Apple masks the 1024 marketing icon. Design the square, and do not bake the rounded corners.

Weather app icon as a simple sun and cloud on a full square, with Apple’s rounded mask shown separately

Quick answer

What makes an App Store icon earn the tap?

Use a recognizable mark at a small size, next to a name that matches it. Apple masks the 1024 marketing icon, so upload a full square PNG with no transparency and no pre-rounded corners. Skip rank badges. The icon does not replace screenshots. Product Page Optimization can test a second icon. Export sizes are in the icon sizes guide.

On this page

The app icon is the tap target beside your name in search, on the Today tab, and at the top of the product page. Screenshots explain. The icon identifies. If the mark is a tiny map, a sentence, or a copy of someone else’s sun, people hesitate or tap the wrong row. Design for that glance, then let Apple’s mask do the rounding.

Export sizes, including the 1024×1024 App Store master and the Play 512, are in app icon sizes. This page is the design decision, not the pixel table. Testing an alternate icon is part of Product Page Optimization. How to read the result sits with acquisition and conversion, not in a guess about “icon rank.”

Apple masks a square. You do not.

You upload a 1024×1024 PNG. Apple applies the squircle mask on the store and on the home screen. If you pre-round the corners, the system mask cuts them again and you get a double curve, a fringe, or a mark that looks smaller than its neighbors. Draw to the edges of the square. Keep important shapes inside a safe area so the mask does not slice the sun in half.

No alpha. The marketing icon has to be fully opaque. A transparent corner from an export is a common failure, and it is not a style. Flatten onto a solid background before you upload. Drop shadows that you baked outside the mark also fight the mask. The system will supply the edge. You supply a clear symbol.

One shape a stranger can name

At store size, detail dies. A weather app that draws a city, a sky, and a five-day graph will become a brown square. A single sun, or a sun and one cloud, can still be named when it is tiny. Pick one metaphor and remove the second idea. If the name is already “Harbor Weather,” the icon does not also need the word Harbor.

Color should separate you from the row, not from your own screenshots. If the app UI is a deep blue night, a pure yellow circle can still be right, as long as the product page does not feel like a different company. Look at the icon beside the first screenshot. They should feel like one product. They do not need to be the same illustration.

Worked example: a weather app

The app shows the current condition and the next hour. The icon should be the condition people came for, simplified: a sun partially behind one cloud, on a blue field that fills the square. No thermometer, no city skyline, no “72°” typeset into the icon. Degrees change. The icon should not. No badge that says NEW, and no laurel that implies a ranking.

Test the safe area by looking at the square with the corners covered. The cloud and the sun should still read. Then look at it at about the size of a search result next to the app name. If you cannot tell it from a generic utilities icon, simplify again. The screenshots can carry the hourly chart. The icon should not try.

Use one sun-and-cloud mark on an opaque square. Let Apple round it. Keep text, badges, and baked corners out of the file.

The icon does not do the screenshot’s job

People who tap still need the first screenshots to confirm the hourly view, the place name, and whatever else the app really does. A clever icon cannot rescue a gallery that shows a different product. A plain icon can still convert if the name and the first frame agree. Do not spend the week on gloss and ship a first screenshot of a settings screen.

Device frames on screenshots are a separate choice, covered in device frames. Do not put a phone frame inside the icon. The icon is the mark. The screenshot is the product. Mixing them makes both smaller.

Test a second icon instead of debating it

If you have two honest marks, a sun-and-cloud and a simpler sun, you do not have to guess forever. Product Page Optimization can test icons, screenshots, and previews, with up to three treatments against the original. Change the icon and leave the screenshots alone if the question is the icon. Changing both teaches you nothing specific.

Read the test in App Analytics as conversion, using Apple’s definition, not as a vibe. Acquisition reports and conversion rate are where that number is explained. A treatment that wins installs and confuses people into refunds is not a win you should apply blindly. There is no published percent that “good icons” add. Do not borrow one from a thread.

What not to put on the square

No screenshot of the app shrunk into the icon. No wordmark that needs reading. No flag, no “free,” no price. No copyrighted character you do not have rights to. No glossy sphere that could belong to any category. Weather is already a crowded metaphor. Your edge is simplicity and a color that still looks like your screenshots, not a louder cloud than the next app.

Google Play’s listing icon is a different file, 512×512, and Play applies its own mask. Do not round that one either. The design can be the same mark. The exports are not the same file. Follow the sizes guide when you leave the App Store and prepare the Play asset. AppGrowthKit does not replace the icon master. Use it for the screenshots that have to agree with whatever mark you ship.

Design an icon for the tap

Work on a square. Judge it small. Upload one opaque file, and test a second only as a treatment.

  1. Name the mark in three words

For the weather app, “sun behind cloud” is enough. If the name needs a paragraph, you have two icons fighting. Drop the skyline, the degree symbol, and the app name from the artwork. The store already prints the name beside the icon.

  2. Draw to the edge of a 1024 square

Fill the background. Keep the sun and cloud inside the area that survives a rounded mask. Do not draw the squircle yourself. Export a PNG with no alpha channel. Open the file and confirm the corners are pixels of your blue, not a checkerboard.

  3. Look at it beside the name

Shrink it until it matches a search row and put the app name next to it. If the cloud disappears, enlarge the shapes and delete a detail. Then place it above the first screenshot. The blue and the condition should feel like the same app the screenshot is about to explain.

  4. Remove badges and claims

Delete NEW, beta ribbons, stars, and prices. Those are not the product, and they go stale or mislead. Guideline 2.3 is about an accurate listing. An icon that implies an award you did not get is a claim, even when it is only a picture.

  5. Test one alternate if you are split

Upload the stronger square as the live icon. If a second square is truly different, add it as a Product Page Optimization treatment and do not also swap the screenshots in that treatment. Apply a winner only after you can read conversion, not after a day of staring at the two files.

Key takeaways

  • The icon earns recognition. The screenshots earn the explanation.
  • Upload an opaque 1024 square. Apple masks it. Do not bake rounded corners or alpha.
  • A weather icon should be one sun and one cloud, not a map or a temperature.
  • No badges, prices, or rank marks on the icon.
  • Product Page Optimization can test an alternate icon. There is no published conversion bonus to assume.

Frequently asked questions

Should I round the corners before uploading?

No. Apple masks the 1024×1024 marketing icon. Pre-rounded corners get masked again and look inset or uneven next to other apps. Deliver a full square with the artwork extended to the edges, and keep the symbol inside a safe area so the squircle does not clip it. The same idea applies to the Play listing icon, which Play masks itself.

Can the icon contain the word “free” or a price?

Do not put price or “free” on the icon. The store already shows a price or Get. A word on the icon is hard to read at small size, and a price goes wrong when territories differ. A weather mark does not need type. If you need words, they belong in the name, the subtitle, or a screenshot caption.

Does a better icon raise conversion by a known percent?

Apple does not publish a percent. Anyone who quotes one is guessing or describing a single test. Run your own Product Page Optimization test if you have two real icons, and read conversion in App Analytics. A clearer mark can help people tap the right row. It is not a rank switch you can set.

Can I test the icon without new screenshots?

Yes. That is the cleaner test. Product Page Optimization supports icon treatments. Keep the screenshot set constant so a change in installs can be tied to the mark. You can run up to three treatments against the original, but one alternate icon is enough of a question for a first test.

Where do I get the other icon sizes?

Start from the 1024 master and follow the app icon sizes guide for the App Store file, the Play 512, and the sizes your binary still needs. Do not design a tiny icon first and scale it up. The store master is the sharp square. Smaller files are exports, not separate illustrations.
