Quick answer

What is the best app mockup generator in 2026?

It depends on where the image goes. For App Store and Google Play screenshots, use a tool that exports exact store sizes with current frames, such as AppGrowthKit, Previewed, or AppScreens. For website heroes and social posts, free browser tools such as Shots.so and the AppGrowthKit Screenshot Beautifier are enough. For 3D device video, Rotato is the specialist. Apple’s own Design Resources give you accurate bezels for free if you work in Figma.

  • AppGrowthKit publishes this page and appears in it. Rows are sorted by output, not scored.

  • Store dimensions follow Apple and Google documentation, linked at the end.

Start with where the mockup is going

A “mockup generator” can mean three different products. Store screenshots have hard rules: exact pixel sizes per device class, no transparency, current hardware if you show a frame at all, and the app must be the real app. Website and social mockups have no rules except looking good, which is why free tools dominate that job. Video mockups are a third category with their own tools. Choosing by output avoids paying for a cinematic 3D renderer when you needed a 1260×2736 PNG.

For store screenshots, pick a row with store sizes. For social and website images, a free browser tool is enough. For video, Rotato.

For App Store and Google Play screenshots

AppGrowthKit

Upload captures from the simulator or a device, describe the app, and AI drafts the sequence, the device frames, and short benefit headlines on a multi-screen canvas. Every element stays a layer, so the mockup is editable rather than rendered once. Export writes the exact App Store Connect and Play Console sizes, including iPhone 6.9-inch and 13-inch iPad, and screenshot copy can be localized across 42 locales on the same layers. Current iPhone, iPad, and Android frames are built in. The device frame guide covers when to show a frame and when to go full-bleed.

Previewed

Previewed is a browser tool with a library of device mockups and screenshot templates for both stores. You pick a template, drop screens in, edit text, and export per device. Its public pages position it for both store screenshots and general device mockups, which makes it a reasonable single tool if you want templates rather than an AI draft.

AppScreens

AppScreens focuses on store screenshot production at volume, with templates, translation, and upload to App Store Connect described on its public pages for paid plans. It is a screenshot tool first and a mockup tool second. The AppScreens comparison goes deeper.

For websites, social posts, and press kits

AppGrowthKit Screenshot Beautifier

The Screenshot Beautifier is a free, no-account browser tool: paste or drop a screenshot, add a device frame or padding, choose a gradient background and shadow, and download a PNG. Rendering happens locally, so nothing leaves your machine. It is for one image at a time, not for store sets.

Shots.so

Shots.so is a popular free browser tool for framed screenshots with backgrounds and device bezels, aimed at social media and product pages. It is quick and the output looks polished. It does not target store dimensions, so treat it as a marketing tool.

Apple Design Resources

Apple publishes free, pixel-accurate device bezels for Figma and Sketch alongside its UI kits. If a designer already works in Figma, this is the most accurate iPhone and iPad frame you can get and it costs nothing. You still own sizing, export, and keeping the file current when new devices ship.

Mockuuups Studio

Mockuuups Studio has a large library of photographed and rendered scenes: hands holding phones, desks, lifestyle shots. It is built for marketing pages and ads rather than store listings, and its public pages describe a free tier with watermarks and paid plans for full access.

For 3D and video

Rotato

Rotato is a macOS app for cinematic 3D device mockups and animated video. It is the right tool for a launch trailer or a website hero and the wrong tool for a store screenshot, where a tilted phone at grid size hurts legibility. The Rotato comparison explains the split.

Mistakes that get store mockups rejected

  • Transparent backgrounds. App Store Connect rejects PNGs with an alpha channel. Flatten before upload.
  • Wrong size for the device class. The iPhone 6.9-inch set accepts 1260×2736, 1290×2796, or 1320×2868; anything else fails validation.
  • Old hardware frames. Apple does not require a frame at all, but if you show one it should match the screenshot size class you are uploading.
  • Mocked-up UI. The screen inside the frame must be the shipping app. Frames and captions are fine; invented dashboards are not.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free iPhone mockup generator?

Yes. The AppGrowthKit Screenshot Beautifier and Shots.so both frame a screenshot in the browser for free, and Apple Design Resources provide free bezels for Figma. For full App Store screenshot sets with exact sizes, most tools charge for export.

Do App Store screenshots need a device frame?

No. Apple accepts full-bleed captures. Frames help when the caption needs room or when the UI alone does not explain the feature. Many top apps mix framed and full-bleed screens in one set.

Which mockup generator exports Google Play sizes?

AppGrowthKit, Previewed, and AppScreens export Play Console phone and tablet sizes. Play accepts screenshots between 320 and 3840 pixels on each side with a maximum 2:1 ratio, plus a 1024×500 feature graphic.

Can I use a 3D mockup as an App Store screenshot?

You can upload one if it meets the size rules, but it usually converts worse than a flat frame with a headline because the app UI becomes hard to read at search-result size. Keep 3D renders for the website and trailer.
