Best App Icon Generators for iOS and Android (2026)

Nine tools sorted by the job: generating a concept, composing the layered iOS 26 icon, and exporting every size Xcode and Android Studio ask for.

Quick answer

What is the best app icon generator in 2026?

There is no single tool because an icon is three jobs. For a concept from a text brief, use an AI generator such as AppGrowthKit or a general image model. For the layered iOS 26 icon with Default, Dark, Clear, and Tinted variants, Apple’s own Icon Composer in Xcode is the reference tool. For exporting every iOS and Android size from a finished 1024-pixel master, a free resizer such as the AppGrowthKit App Icon Generator or Icon Kitchen does the job in seconds.

  • AppGrowthKit publishes this page and appears in it. The table is organized by job, not by score.
  • Checked against each product’s public pages on 10 October 2026.
  • Sizes and variant rules follow Apple and Google documentation, linked at the end.

An app icon is three separate jobs

Most “best icon generator” lists compare tools that do different things. Sorting by job makes the choice obvious. Job one is the concept: what the mark is, which colours, how it reads at 60 pixels next to a competitor. Job two is composition: on iOS 26 an icon is a layered document with Default, Dark, Clear, and Tinted appearances, and on Android it is an adaptive icon with separate foreground and background layers. Job three is export: a 1024×1024 master turned into the dozens of PNG sizes Xcode asset catalogs and Android density folders expect.

A tool that is excellent at job three (resizing) is usually useless for job one (ideas), and a prompt-based image model that is fun for job one produces files that fail job two. The exact pixel list is in the app icon sizes guide; this page is about which tool to open.

Use an AI tool for the concept, Apple Icon Composer or Icon Kitchen for the layered file, and any free resizer for the size pack. No single row covers all three.

1. AppGrowthKit

AppGrowthKit generates icon directions from a short description of the app inside the same project that holds your App Store screenshots, so the icon and the first three screens are designed together and stay on one palette. The free App Icon Generator takes a finished 1024-pixel master and exports every iOS and Android size in the browser, with no account and nothing uploaded to a server. It does not compose layered iOS 26 icons or Android adaptive layers; for those, hand the master to Icon Composer or Icon Kitchen.

2. Apple Icon Composer

Icon Composer ships with Xcode 26 and is the tool Apple built for the Liquid Glass icon system. You import flat layers, arrange them in depth, and preview the Default, Dark, Clear, and Tinted appearances the system renders. The output is a single icon file that Xcode consumes directly, so every variant stays in sync. It has no idea generation and assumes you arrive with artwork, which is why it pairs well with an AI concept tool rather than replacing one.

3. Icon Kitchen

Icon Kitchen is a free browser tool, best known in Android circles, for composing adaptive icons. You bring a foreground mark, pick a background colour or image, set padding and shape, and preview the safe zone and mask variants before downloading platform-sized files. It also offers iOS and web sizes. Like Icon Composer it is a composition and export tool, not a concept tool.

4. Figma

If a designer draws the mark, it is drawn in Figma. Vector control, components for variants, and community templates for the iOS grid make it the right place for a mark that will live for years. The costs are time and the manual export step: you still need a resizer or a plugin to produce the full size pack, and the layered iOS 26 file is assembled in Icon Composer afterwards.

5. General image models

ChatGPT, Gemini, and Midjourney produce icon-shaped images from a prompt and are useful for the first hour of exploration. They are not icon-aware: outputs often include baked-in rounded corners, drop shadows, or text that break at small sizes, and none of them export a layered or sized file. Treat the result as a mood board, then rebuild the chosen direction as clean layers.

6. Canva

Canva has icon templates and a general-purpose AI image feature, which makes it a reasonable choice for a non-designer who needs something presentable today. Export is a flat PNG at the size you set, so you still need a resizer, and there is no adaptive or layered workflow.

7. Resize utilities

Appicon.co, MakeAppIcon, and similar sites do one thing: upload a 1024 master, download a zip of sizes. They are fine for job three. Check that the download includes a current Xcode asset catalog layout and Android mipmap folders, and prefer a tool that resizes in the browser if you would rather not upload the artwork at all.

8. Android Studio Image Asset

Built into Android Studio, the Image Asset wizard previews an adaptive icon across launcher shapes and writes the density folders for you. It is the quickest way to validate that a foreground layer survives circular and squircle masks before you ship.

A workflow that uses the right tool for each job

  1. Generate three to five directions from a one-line brief in AppGrowthKit or an image model. Judge them at 60 pixels, beside your category leaders, not full screen.
  2. Rebuild the winner as clean layers, in Figma or directly in Icon Composer. Keep text out of the mark unless it is a single letter.
  3. Compose the iOS 26 appearances in Icon Composer and the Android adaptive icon in Icon Kitchen or Android Studio.
  4. Export the size pack from the free App Icon Generator and check the result against the size table.
  5. Put the icon next to the first screenshot and look at both as a search result. If they fight, change the screenshot background, not the icon.

Frequently asked questions

What size does an app icon need to be?

Design at 1024×1024 pixels with no transparency and square corners; the stores apply their own mask. Xcode and Android Studio derive the smaller sizes from that master. Android adaptive icons use 108×108 dp layers with a 66 dp safe zone in the centre.

Do I need Dark and Tinted icon variants on iOS?

The system will generate them from your Default icon if you provide nothing, but the automatic result is often muddy. Icon Composer lets you supply each appearance deliberately, which is worth an hour for any app that cares about how it looks on a tinted home screen.

Can I generate an app icon from my logo?

Yes, and it is usually the right starting point. Strip the wordmark, keep the symbol, give it a solid background with enough contrast, and test it at 60 pixels. Most logos need a simplified icon version rather than a straight resize.

Is there a free app icon generator?

Yes. Apple Icon Composer, Icon Kitchen, Android Studio’s Image Asset wizard, and the AppGrowthKit App Icon Generator are all free. Paid plans only matter for AI concept generation and for the screenshot workflow around the icon.
