How Google Play Featuring Actually Works
Play does not sell a featured slot, and it does not publish a nomination form that guarantees one. The listing you ship is what a promotion would use.

Quick answer
How do you get featured on Google Play?
Google does not publish a self-serve form that guarantees a featured placement. Featuring and other promotion use the listing you already uploaded: feature graphic, screenshots, short description, and video. Requirements on those assets are mandatory. The “highly recommended” bar is what Play says can affect recommendation and promotion. A cozy cooking game still has to show the actual kitchen, not a poster that the game does not contain.

Low Simmer is a cozy cooking game: one pot, a short list of ingredients, a timer, and a finished plate. If Play ever puts that game on a promotional surface, the art it can use is the art you uploaded. There is no public form, in the Play Console help this guide is based on, that says “submit this and you will be featured.” There is also no address you email to buy the slot. Treat any message that claims otherwise as not Google’s process.
What Google does publish is how preview assets are used. The preview assets help page says the feature graphic, screenshots, short description, and videos highlight and promote the app on Google Play and on other Google promotional channels. Apple’s path is a nomination. Play’s published path is a complete listing. The App Store nomination guide is the other store. Do not copy its form into Play Console.
Promotion uses the listing, not a secret kit
You manage graphics on the main store listing: Grow users, Store presence, Main store listing. Assets you add show on the listing across test tracks. By publishing on Google Play you grant Google a license to use the icon, screenshots, and videos for promotional purposes. The same help page points at the Developer Distribution Agreement, section 6, for that license. Low Simmer does not need a separate press folder emailed to a curator before the listing itself is honest.
There is a brake. On Store settings you can uncheck External marketing. Play says that restricts promotion of the app across Google-owned properties. If you turn that off because you are not ready to be shown, do not be surprised when promotional surfaces ignore you. Leave it on only when the graphic, the screenshots, and the video match the build a stranger would install.
Requirements and the promotion bar are different
The preview-asset page splits “Requirements” from “Highly recommended.” Requirements are mandatory. Missing them can mean removal or suspension, not a missed feature. Highly recommended guidance is the part Play ties to recommendation and promotion. Ignoring it does not, by itself, take down the store listing page. It can change how the assets appear, or limit promotional opportunities. That is the closest official line to “featuring” in this document, and it is not a guarantee.
All of it still has to follow the Developer Program Policies. Store-listing best practices add a content rule that matters for a cooking game: do not put ranking claims, prices, or misleading badges on the icon, and keep violence and other restricted imagery out of graphics if the audience is general. A wooden spoon and a pot are fine. A fake “#1 cooking game” badge on the feature graphic is a metadata problem, not a featuring tactic.
What Low Simmer should have on the listing
| Asset | Job on the listing | Low Simmer version |
|---|---|---|
| Feature graphic | A wide image Play uses with promotion, not a second app icon. | The pot on the stove, readable at a small size, with no rank badge or price. |
| Screenshots | Show the app in use, in order, on a phone. | Chop, simmer, plate. Real UI, not a painting of a kitchen the game does not have. |
| Short description | The short synopsis required to publish the listing. | One or two sentences about cooking a single dish on a weeknight. |
| Preview video | Optional on the form, useful when you want the dish to move. | One dish from ingredients to plate, captured from the game. |
Play’s preview-asset page treats the feature graphic, screenshots, short description, and video as the materials used to highlight the app on Play and on other Google promotional channels.
A cozy game still has to look finished
Low Simmer’s feature graphic should be the pot, not a logo on a gradient. The size and file rules live in the feature graphic size guide. The first screenshots should be the game: a cutting board, the timer, the plated dish. If you add a video, show one cook from start to finish. The Play promo video notes cover the video as its own job. A trailer that promises a restaurant empire the game does not contain will not help a human, or a policy review, trust the listing.
AppGrowthKit is useful here only after those screens exist: frame the real UI, write a caption a hungry person can read, and export the Play sizes. Do not generate a kitchen the build cannot open. The short description has to be true in well under a paragraph. Best-practice guidance on the listing says to lead with the benefit, stay accurate, and skip ranking claims and promotional prices in that text.
Custom listings and pre-registration are other jobs
A custom store listing can show different text and graphics to a segment, including people who can pre-register, people in a country, or people who searched a phrase. That is targeting, not an editorial feature. Read custom store listings when you need a second page for a campaign. It does not replace the main listing Play may use for promotion.
Pre-registration is how you let people sign up before the game is published in countries you choose. Play can notify them at launch. That is a launch tool, covered in the pre-registration guide. It is not a featuring request. If the pre-registration listing is missing a feature graphic or shows a dish the game will not ship, you have advertised a different product to the people most likely to install on day one.
What to do instead of waiting to be picked
Ship the listing you would be willing to see on a banner. Icon, feature graphic, screenshots, short description, and a video if you have a real session to show. Click External marketing only in the direction you mean: checked means you are allowing promotion on Google-owned properties, unchecked means you are restricting it. Then get the game into the hands of people who cook on weeknights, through your own channels. If an editor or an automated placement uses the listing, they will use those assets.
The rest of getting a first version onto the store, including the closed test a new personal Play account may need, is the launch checklist plus Play’s own testing rules. Featuring does not skip review, content rating, or Data safety. A beautiful pot graphic on an app that cannot be installed is not a promotion. It is a broken promise.
Make Low Simmer’s listing promotion-ready
This is listing work, not an application. When it is done, Play has something accurate to promote. That is the whole official lever.
Capture one real dish
Play a full recipe in Low Simmer on a phone and save the chopping screen, the simmer with the timer visible, and the plated dish. Use the build you will ship. If a screenshot shows a pantry the game does not have, delete it. Promotion that uses a lie becomes a policy problem the moment the asset is on the listing.
Set the feature graphic and icon
Design the feature graphic around the pot, large enough to read as a thumbnail, with no “#1,” no price, and no Play badge. Match the icon to the same pot so search and a promotional crop look like one game. Follow the current file rules on the preview-asset page rather than a size you remember from an old template.
Write the short description from the dish
Say what the player does on a weeknight: pick a dish, cook it in one pot, plate it. Skip discounts, awards, and a list of every ingredient in the game. The short description is required to publish, and it is one of the texts Play associates with how the app is highlighted. If it overclaims, the graphic cannot save it.
Add a video only if it is the game
Record one cook from the first ingredient to the plate, with the game’s UI visible. A mood film of a real kitchen is a different product. Upload it in the Graphics section of the main store listing if you want that motion available for the listing and for promotional use. If you do not have a stable session yet, ship without the video rather than shipping a mock.
Decide external marketing on purpose
Open Store settings and look at External marketing before you tell anyone the game is live. Leave promotion available if the assets are true and you want Play to be able to use them on Google-owned properties. Uncheck it if you are explicitly restricting that promotion. Then stop looking for a featuring form. The listing is the submission.
Key takeaways
- Play does not publish a nomination that guarantees a featured slot. Ignore emails that pretend otherwise.
- Feature graphic, screenshots, short description, and video are the assets Play says it uses to highlight and promote the app.
- Requirements can get a listing removed. Highly recommended guidance is what Play ties to promotional opportunities.
- Unchecking External marketing restricts promotion on Google-owned properties.
- Custom listings and pre-registration are separate tools. They do not book an editorial feature.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Google Play featuring application?
Not in the Play Console help pages this guide uses. Apple lets you file a featuring nomination. Play’s published material talks about preview assets being used to highlight and promote the app on Google Play and on other Google promotional channels, and about highly recommended asset guidelines that can limit promotional opportunities if you ignore them. There is no step that says a completed form reserves a collection or a homepage slot. Do not pay a third party who claims to file that form for you.
Does a feature graphic get a cooking game featured?
A feature graphic is part of the listing Play can use when it promotes an app. It is not a ticket. Low Simmer still needs screenshots of the real game, a short description that tells the truth, and, if you include one, a video of an actual cook. The preview-asset page treats those pieces as promotional material. Missing a mandatory requirement is a policy risk. Meeting the highly recommended bar only makes promotion possible.
Can I email Google and ask to be featured?
There is no public featuring inbox described on the preview-asset page or the store-listing best-practices page. The controls you do have are the main store listing and the External marketing checkbox, which can restrict promotion across Google-owned properties. Uploading the assets also grants Google license to use them for promotion, as described in the distribution agreement section the help page cites. Spend the afternoon on the pot, the screenshots, and the short description.
Will a custom store listing get Low Simmer featured?
No. A custom store listing shows a different page to a chosen audience, such as pre-registration users or a country. That is your campaign creative, served by Play’s targeting, not an editor picking the game for a collection. Keep the main listing complete even if a custom listing exists, because promotional use is tied to the assets on the listing Play is allowed to show. A custom page with a different dish than the main page will confuse the people who arrive from both places.
Should I wait to launch until I am featured?
No. Featuring is not a launch gate, and you cannot schedule it. Publish when the game, the content rating, Data safety, and the listing are ready, including any closed-test requirement on a new personal account. Use pre-registration if you want a list of people to notify, and use your own audience to send them to the listing. If Play promotes Low Simmer later, it will promote the listing that is live that day, so the screenshots have to survive a stranger’s glance without you in the room.
