Q4 ASO: Refresh Keywords and Screenshots Now

Organic ranking takes weeks to settle. September is the last clean window before Halloween and holiday search. What to change this week.

Quick answer

When should indie apps refresh App Store keywords and screenshots for Q4?

Do the metadata and screenshot work in September. Organic ranking commonly takes weeks to settle, so a mid-November keyword swap is too late for Halloween and tight for gift search. Keep evergreen terms in the default listing. Put seasonal stories on Custom Product Pages instead of stuffing “christmas” into an app that is not seasonal. Recapture screenshots if they still look like summer or still show pre-iOS 26 chrome.

  • Plan on ranking taking weeks — a practical window is four to six — so September is the last clean shot
  • Protect evergreen keywords on the default product page
  • Use Custom Product Pages for Halloween, gifts, or New Year habit stories
  • Replace summer-looking screenshot sets before Q4 browse traffic hits
  • Recapture if the live app is Liquid Glass and the listing is still opaque

Q4 does not start on Black Friday. It starts when you still have time for App Store search to digest a keyword change. If you wait until the week of Halloween to rewrite the 100-character field, you are asking organic ranking to move during the noisiest stretch of the year. September is the last quiet week that still sits in front of Halloween, gifts, and January habit search.

Apple’s own product-page guidance is blunt about keywords: be specific, skip category names and the word “app,” and do not stuff irrelevant terms. Seasonal stuffing is the Q4 version of that mistake. “Christmas” in a year-round invoice app does not make you a gift guide. It makes the listing look desperate and can sit in the field long after December. Read the keyword-field guide before you burn the 100 characters on a holiday that is not your product.

Why this week, not November

Apple does not publish a ranking SLA. In practice, a metadata change is not a same-day switch. Plan on weeks, not a weekend. A working window many indie teams use is four to six weeks from a keyword or subtitle edit to a listing that has actually settled. That is a planning assumption, not an Apple statistic — and it is why a September 5 edit can still matter for late October, while a November 20 edit mostly trains you for next year.

Do default-listing work now. Attach true seasonal stories to Custom Product Pages with enough lead time that search can actually use them.

Seasonal keywords versus evergreen

  • Evergreen: the job people search all year. Protect these in name, subtitle, and the keyword field.
  • Seasonal: halloween, gifts, wrapping, new year, resolutions, “back to routine.” Use them only if the binary actually does that job.
  • Campaign-only: a phrase you will bid on or put in a Custom Product Page URL, not a reason to gut the default field.
  • Never: competitor names, category words Apple already has, or a holiday the app cannot fulfill on day one.

The right seasonal surface is a Custom Product Page. Assign the holiday keywords to that page so search can show a Halloween or gift story without replacing the default screenshots. When the season ends, hide or stop promoting the page. The default listing stays honest.

Screenshots that still look like summer

A Q4 keyword change on top of June captions is a mixed signal. If frame 1 still says “summer reset,” or the UI is last year’s opaque chrome, recapture before you touch metadata. Uploads have required the iOS 26 SDK since April 28, 2026. If the listing still shows pre-glass bars, you are advertising an app you no longer ship — details in the Liquid Glass screenshot guide. Localize the new set for markets that actually convert; do not ship English holiday puns over German UI. Workflow: screenshot localization.

  • Replace seasonal captions that already expired (beach, “summer body,” back-to-school if that window closed).
  • Keep the job-to-be-done in screenshot 1. A snowflake background is not a Q4 strategy.
  • If you need a holiday story, put it on a Custom Product Page, not in every default frame.
  • Recapture from the current binary so iOS 26 chrome matches what people install.

Run a one-week Q4 listing refresh

  1. Audit the default metadata

Export name, subtitle, and keyword field. Highlight terms you would still want in February. Those stay. Holiday extras come out of the default field unless the product is genuinely seasonal.

  2. Decide which seasons are real

Write one honest sentence for Halloween, gifts, and New Year. If you cannot show that job in the current binary, you do not get that keyword.

  3. Recapture the default screenshot set

Shoot filled, current UI. Rebuild captions and device frames in AppGrowthKit, then export every App Store and Google Play size. Default frames should still work in March.

  4. Ship seasonal stories as Custom Product Pages

One page per real seasonal job. Assign keywords from the latest approved version. Do not overwrite screenshot 1 on the default listing with a pumpkin.

  5. Submit while the week is still September

Keyword and screenshot changes that need a version should go out now. Promotional text can wait. Ranking cannot.

Q4 ASO questions

When should I change App Store keywords for holiday search?

In September if you want organic results to have a chance before Halloween and gift queries. Ranking is not instant. Waiting until mid-November is a paid-campaign plan, not an organic one.

Should I put “christmas” in the keyword field of a non-seasonal app?

No. Apple tells you not to use terms that are not relevant. A year-round utility that cannot fulfill a gift job should not spend keyword budget on a holiday. If you have a real seasonal mode, put those terms on a Custom Product Page.

Should I replace my default screenshots with holiday art?

Not if the default page has to convert in January. Holiday frames expire. Use a Custom Product Page for the seasonal story and keep the default set evergreen — and current with the live UI.

Do I need to recapture for Liquid Glass before a Q4 keyword swap?

If the shipping binary already uses iOS 26 chrome and the listing still shows last year’s opaque bars, recapture first. A keyword change on top of stale screenshots advertises the wrong product.

Refresh the default set. Put the holiday story on its own page.

AppGrowthKit generates AI layouts and copy on editable layers, wraps them in device frames, and exports store-ready App Store and Google Play sizes — so the Q4 recapture is a recapture, not a two-week Figma project.
